FLOURISH

3D, Branding, Presentation20'x10'x16.5'Aug–Oct 2021
A 3D point of purchase (POP) site addressing sustainability and food insecurity at SJSU while remaining compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Key images and a narrated video presentation were featured in the exhibition New Kinships: Community Dialogues and Interdisciplinary Connections from the Taste of Home project. 
I learned about ADA compliancy for the first time, learned more about college food insecurity and sustainability, and I also got much more familiar with Fusion 360 and how to think in 3D—there is no a "back", so we must design with all views in mind.


	PROCESSFrom thorough research on topics and products&#38;nbsp;to initial sketches, a revised concept Fusion 360 struggles, and the final outcome.

	COLLEGE FOOD INSECURITY RESEARCH
In a randomly selected group with Linh Hoang, Wenwen Su, and Tianting Sun, we researched food insecurity globally, state-wide, and at SJSU, along with food literacy. We also analyzed the programs of CalFresh, Campus Community Garden, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Spartan Food Pantry, and Swipe Out Hunger.

I knew that I wanted to create a comfortable and convenient space for SJSU students, so my initial sketches were centered around the concept of "open area self-service". My initial struggles were properly visualizing scale, how to handle the checkout section, and having enough room around each structure to remain ADA compliant.

After establishing the color palette, I began developing the logo wordmark and visual of a person in the 'i'. I was still playing around with the layout of the site, taking away all unnecessary parts, envisioning a traffic flow, and considering floor graphics to better connect each structure. I struggled with making a form for each structure that was interesting, practical, and intuitive.
FUSION 360 STRUGGLES

After researching exactly which foods and features I want where, actually modeling the forms in Fusion 360—which I would be using only for the second time in my life—was quite challenging at first. I dedicated a week to really changing the site from disconnected forms to a truly unique final outcome.

	
	BRAND IDENTITY

The logo is organic but still structured, with the touch of the 'i' representing the thriving student. Typography is kept rounded, legible, and friendly. The color palette is used to match contrasting pairs in site applications. Packaging color codes each food category to its respective zone—whether it be fruity, nutty, savory, or sweet.

Overall, the goal of Flourish is to allow college students to be healthy and feel taken care of by their school. Although Flourish is targeted towards SJSU students, the concept of this site can definitely be used by other colleges as well.

A bus shelter poster of a personally influential design period and artist: 1920s Russian Constructivist movie posters, specifically from the Stenberg Brothers.


	RESEARCHBefore I narrowed down my exact topic to the Stenberg Brothers, I first chose the overall topic of Russian Constructivism, specifically in the 1920s; Their posters have excellent hierarchy and can effectively convey a message without seeming over or under-designed.

	VERSION 1Taking what I thought were the most effective and cohesive Stenberg Brothers movie posters and putting them all together, I established hierarchy and grouping from where I want the viewer's eyes to go and in what order. However, I felt that the poster was still visually lacking a "punch" to make it more eye-catching and engaging.

Aug–Oct 2020
An original typeface inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven, with applications of a book, poster, t-shirt, 3D form, Rhino-Grasshopper drawing, and robot arm drawing. I picked Beethoven because of my musical background and admiration for his perseverance, work ethic, and work quality. This was my first deep dive into typography, and I especially learned a lot about the proper anatomy and proportions of each letter, seen when comparing my initial sketches to the final version.

	TYPEFACE APPLICATIONSAfter the sketches, then digital drawings, then finally making it into an actual typeface, applying the type to a poster, t-shirt, 3D, and a robot arm drawing opened my mind to the endless possibilities that one can create with type.

For the typeface poster, I created a space that resembles ledger lines in written music, as though this is another sheet that Beethoven would scribble composition ideas on. However, instead of musical notes and notations, I have the opening lines from the Ode to Joy, with many "joys" as a background texture to capture the feeling of an actual choir singing.

The 3D application took the form of the letter 'M' and made it into a miniature conductor podium. The printed music is from Beethoven's famous Symphony No. 9, since that has the Ode to Joy.

In an opportunity to work with a Robot Arm, I worked in Rhino and Grasshopper software to create my personal assigned letter 'U'. This U is made of many Us in this original typeface. My Illustrator drawing has a sharper look and feel, but I also appreciate the robot drawing—with its limitations and the outcomes of working with a brush and ink—for its more organic quality, and a visual feeling as if it were melting.

A collaboration with Brandon Huynh and Tanya Shrivastava. 
Memory Lane is a mobile app centered around connection that allows you to unlock close by memories with "keys", in addition to leaving your own keys for anyone to find. Think geo-caching, but with memories. This encourages healthy habits including outdoor activity, self-reflection, self-expression, and communication. 
This project was a "Start-Up Battle" between different groups in our class; Each group presented their idea to a panel of Nvidia "sharks" who picked us as the winner, thanks to our clear and upfront presentation, and distinct look and feel.

LOW-FIDELITY WIREFRAMESAfter establishing a clear user story, we created low-fidelity wireframes of the story's specific flow—in this case, checking the map and selecting a key. When we first started making our screens, issues of clarity and ease of flow came up and were resolved.

	HIGH-FIDELITY SCREENSApplying brand identity and further refinements after user testing led to a nostalgic, connecting experience. These specific flows involve selecting a key on the map home page, finding the key, leaving a comment, and viewing all social activity on that key. We also made the flow for when the user wants to leave a key themselves, including writing a preview, selecting media, and placing their key—thus their memory—on the map.

The vertically stacking visualization of data led me to my final concept of a first page of overall data, with a second page showing much richer details. After selecting my media to analyze—Discord, the SJSU BFA messaging app of choice—I laid out the information of who, what, and how to establish figure/ground, then thought of ways to divide information into 4 sections for the tetrad of enhancement, retrieval, obsolescence, and reversal. I struggled for a while at this part, and even my final iteration could benefit from refinement after a long refresh.

	It was very interesting to see how I behave in terms of using technology. I could have saved time if I went straight to digitally recording my data instead of writing everything down first, so having good resources that can help automate data tracking will come in handy for future data visualizations.

Image making based on a personal favorite song of mine, the hard-hitting, mostly instrumental song "Look But Don't Touch" by Polyphia featuring Lewis Grant, with the outcome of 5 album covers and 5 typographical visuals.

ITERATIONSThe first round of iterations, especially in which I tried to use Blender for type, was not quite successful, especially in terms of the pure visuals. I was not satisfied and had to really push myself (and take quite a few trips to Michael's) to gather materials that made for a more unique final outcome.

	TYPOGRAPHIC ITERATIONSMy initial try-outs for the type-based solution 2 were difficult to capture the dangerous yet intriguing feeling I was aiming for. However, the contrast in visual textures and implied materials allowed me to take it to the next level when experimenting with unconventional analogue materials.
